Sudan

GOAL has been responding to humanitarian and development needs in Sudan since 1985. Operating in North Darfur and South Kordofan, our team support conflict-affected populations through integrated programmes in nutrition, health, WASH, food security and livelihoods - with women’s empowerment and protection mainstreamed throughout. Delivered by a team of 160 people, we are committed to meeting humanitarian needs whilst also investing in longer-term community development.

What we do in Sudan

Resilient Health
Food & Nutrition Security
Livelihoods and Inclusion

From direct care to health system strengthening

GOAL Sudan is working to improve access to comprehensive primary healthcare services in 23 facilities across North Darfur and South Kordofan. These are supported by focused work in local communities, with projects designed to promote health-seeking behaviour and increase service uptake. Critically, the team is also working to improve the systems that deliver this care. This means strengthening the technical, leadership and management capacity of professionals, upgrading facility infrastructure, improving information systems and supporting policy frameworks.

GOAL is the only NGO providing integrated WASH services in Kutum and Al Waha localities in North Darfur. We support 17 health facilities providing comprehensive services to more than 180,000 internally displaced people and vulnerable people.

Case identification, nutrition screening and care

GOAL supports case identification, carries out nutrition screening campaigns and works closely with families and caregivers to promote home screening through the use of MUAC (Mid-Upper Arm Circumference) tapes. Our Outpatient Therapeutic Programme runs in 23 centres across North Darfur and South Kordofan – with each providing life-saving treatment for patients suffering from severe acute malnutrition. Those in need of specialist care are referred to their nearest stabilisation centre, where GOAL also supports the delivery of in-patient care.

This work is complemented by GOAL's Nutrition Impact and Positive Practice (NIPP) approach, a behaviour change model that works to address key causes of malnutrition. Our Sustainable Livelihoods programme then supports communities as they look to increase food production for the long-term.

Food production and business skills

GOAL Sudan is working to improve the availability of diverse, nutritious food sources by increasing access to locally-adapted and improved crop seed varieties. Programming also includes micro-gardening, restocking and capacity building of agricultural extension services.

In addition, GOAL allows local entrepreneurs to access vocational training and small grants to support income generation activity. This is combined with REFLECT methodology to build women's business skills and financial literacy. Business owners are also encouraged to set up Village Saving and Loan Associations (VSLAs) as they plan for a future of financial growth and expansion.
